「プラペン」の話をしよう。
「プラペン」が、二度目の生産を迎える。二度目、と言っても、実に二年半ぶりのことだ。
二年半。振り返れば、それは瞬きするほどの短い時間だったような気もするし、あるいは、永遠にも等しい歳月だったような気もする。誰かが僕の知らない間に、静かにカレンダーのページをめくり続けていたみたいに。
僕たちの時間の感覚というのは、いつだって曖昧で、不確かだ。二年半なんて、案外あっけない。

この「プラペン」は、その名のとおりプラスチックでできたペンシルベイトだ。
水平に浮かび、内部にはラトルが仕込まれている。まるで小さな秘密を抱えた楽器のように。
投げれば、どこまでも気持ちよく飛んでいく。そして、誰の手にかかっても素直に言うことを聞いてくれるのだ、まるでそこに最初から命が宿っていたかのように滑らかに動き出す。驚くほど簡単に操ることができる。
小刻みに竿を動かすと、小さく身体を翻し、まるで何かを囁くように、くるりと向きを変え水面に音を残す。まるで水の上で踊っているみたいに。
もう少し大胆に動かしてやれば、気持ちよさそうにぐいっと大きく体をくねらせ、長いスライドを描いて、どこか遠くへ向かって泳いでいく。
その口元の窪みが、「チュピチュピ」と、どこか懐かしいような、それでいて少しだけ物悲しいような音を響かせる。

たぶん多くの人が、ペンシルベイトは難しいとか、釣れにくいとか、そんなふうに思っているんじゃないかと思う
でも、それは誤解なんだ。実際はちっともそんなことはない。ぼくはそう断言できる。
だから、もし機会があるなら、ちょっとした気まぐれで手に取ってみてくれればいい。きっと、君は驚くはずだ。この小さなプラスチックの塊が、場所を選ばずに、静かに、しかし確実に、君に何かをもたらしてくれるだろう。それは、魚かもしれないし、あるいは、もっと別の、もっと大切な何かかもしれない。世界は、案外そんなふうにできている。

Let’s talk about the “PlaPen.”

The “PlaPen” is now being produced for the second time. And when I say “second,” it’s actually been two and a half years since the last one. Two and a half years. Looking back, it feels like such a short time—as if it passed in the blink of an eye, and yet, it could also feel like an eternity. It’s as though someone has been quietly turning the pages of a calendar without me noticing. Our sense of time is always so vague and uncertain. Two and a half years can slip by surprisingly quickly.

As its name suggests, the “PlaPen” is a pencil bait made of plastic. It floats horizontally and has a rattle built into it, like a musical instrument hiding a little secret. When you cast it, it flies smoothly and effortlessly. No matter who uses it, it responds to every command as if it had been alive from the beginning—it’s surprisingly easy to control. With a slight wiggle of the rod, it tosses its body lightly, turning around as if whispering to you, leaving ripples and a sound on the water’s surface. It’s like watching it dance across the water. But if you make a bolder movement, it gives a big, satisfying twist and turn, drawing a long slide as it glides off into the distance. The hollows around its mouth make a nostalgic, and ever so slightly melancholic, “chupichupichu” sound.

I think many people believe that pencil baits are difficult to use, or that it’s hard to catch fish with them. But that’s a misunderstanding. In fact, that’s not true at all—I can say that with certainty. So, if you ever get the chance, pick one up on a whim and give it a try. I’m sure you’ll be surprised. No matter where you are, this small piece of plastic will quietly, but surely, bring you something. It might be a fish, or it might be something else—something even more important. That’s just the way the world works, in surprising ways.
